Allotments Under Threat

Across the country, cash strapped councils are trying to sell off allotment land, often to property developers.

Through two world wars, the nation's allotments contributed incalculably to food production, inspiring the slogan 'Dig for Victory'. However, increasing affluence and urban encroachment has reduced the number of plots from 1.5 million in the late 1940s to an estimated 150,000 today.  Those remaining are under siege.
